Domestic Experiential Learning Programs are Removing Traditional Barriers to Participation

As the field of study abroad continues to grapple with major travel restrictions, how can institutions provide an authentic global experience for their students? One answer is through domestic “study away” programs, which are rapidly expanding as experiences closer to home break down barriers of inequity, enabling more students the opportunity to learn about cultures beyond the borders of their campus.

While domestic “study away” opportunities are not new, a growing number of college and university leaders are now seeing them in a new light. Domestic educational experiences offer a wealth of untapped cultural exposure and reach different populations of students, often those who are underserved, minority students, and even DACA students.
